THIS IS FICTION had its first preview last night, and we have a truly special show. I suspected as much, but you never know until you know.
Even though we started with a strong script, with InViolet actors who won their roles in a tough audition, with Richard Masur who is a pro with talent and technique and experience to spare, with an experienced, uber-talented director Shelley Butler, and with our award winning designers Lauren Helpern, Les Dickert, Leon Rothenburg, and Ashley Gardner – all of that still does not guarantee that the production will achieve what we all desired.
No one sets out to make a piece of art that is less than spectacular, but often the result turns out to be just that. And that must be okay. Everyone must have the right and room to fail – to get better – to learn – to fail better next time (thanks SB). Creating theater – especially on an off-off Broadway budget is hard. However, I’m thrilled to report this production is very strong, and I hope you and everyone you know will get the opportunity to see it.
So excited for opening. More updates to come …
